My Funny Valentine Playlist

February 14, 2014 Posted by Willingham

funny valentine playlist

Yes, yes. We all know the quintessential romantic encounter. Dinner for two by candlelight, gazing long hours into one another’s eyes, so smitten dinner is forgotten while the violinist plays Mozart’s “Romance Andante” in the corner and the waiter stands at the ready with a towel folded over his arm.

But somewhere along the line, if it’s going to be a truly good night, someone is going to have to make a joke and someone is going to have to laugh. Trust us. They’ve done studies. In the most general terms, women seek partners who can make them laugh. Men seek partners who can appreciate their jokes.

Either way, humor is an essential ingredient to a good relationship, and may even play a part in evolutionary survival.

We want you to have a happy Valentine’s Day, and we’re here to help with a Valentine playlist of great love songs. A Funny Valentine Playlist.

So please, laugh with your love. The future of the human race depends on it.

Sports Humor: Dwight Howard and the Center for Centers

February 10, 2014 Posted by Willingham

[on a scale from wit to whimsy: Parody]

I never played basketball, though I’m the sort of person often asked not if I played but where. Of course, I’m also the sort of person nabbed by diminutive redheads with AARP cards and a bit too much perfume so early in the day, taken by the hand to the granola section of the cereal aisle in the supermarket where that one little box of cranberry almond is pushed way to the back on the very top shelf, and couldn’t I just be a sweetheart and reach up there to get it and put it in her cart.

I’ve raised two Centers, though. I feel for them, the big men left out in the cold in the NBA All-Star balloting. After I grab a tissue from the sidebar because of this moving video from Dwight Howard, I’m going to see about making a contribution to Dwight’s fund to save the Center.

Business Humor: Conference Call in Real Life

February 5, 2014 Posted by Willingham

[on a scale from wit to whimsy: Parody]

How can you write funny? (Or, film funny.)

Sometimes it’s as simple as taking something routine and standing it on its head.

What if your next business conference call took place in physical space, instead of over the airwaves?

Try your own hand at business humor, and let us know how it goes 🙂

Apple’s iPad Air: Most Popular Poetry Producing Venues

January 25, 2014 Posted by Willingham

apple ipad poetry ad from doghouse diaries

[on a scale from wit to whimsy: Dry, Funny, Smirk]

By now we’ve all seen the ad.

(You haven’t? Hold on a second, then. Fire up your YouTube and watch it.)

It’s poignant. Inspiring. Leaves a person wanting to rush out and buy an iPad Air so he can capture gorgeous footage of Iguazu Falls (wish I’d had one when I was there). Or chase a terrifying storm (I don’t need one for that).

But we all know the setting where iPad gets its most strenuous use, don’t we?

So then, you there in the lavatory: What will your verse be?

Sarcasm Primer from Carol Burnett and Stephen Colbert

January 15, 2014 Posted by Willingham

[On a scale from wit to whimsy: Snark]

The Colbert Report

Sometimes, it’s hard to tell when someone is being funny. Carol Burnett gives Stephen Colbert a lesson in sarcasm. “Stephen, I don’t think you got my letter at all.”

You’ll find a bit of satire and hyperbole in this clip, along with snark from Carol and even a dash of Colbert’s own brand of self-deprecating humor in the opening (which includes one sort of naughty word that could also be a man’s name).
